Education Department details FAFSA strategy for the year ahead. But, there is still ‘potential for chaos,’ expert says
The U.S. Department of Education announced additional details about the rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the upcoming year, which may address some of the issues that plagued last year’s college aid application cycle.
The 2025-26 FAFSA will be available to limited groups of students in a series of beta tests starting on Oct. 1, before becoming available to all students and contributors on or before Dec. 1, the Education Department said Tuesday.
(Typically, all students have access to the coming academic year’s form in October.)
“We’re using the beta testing period to uncover and fix issues with the FAFSA form before the form is available to millions of students and their families,” FAFSA Executive Advisor Jeremy Singer said in a statement.
The detailed framework on the 2025-26 student aid application follows the department’s initial announcement of a “phased rollout.”
